And here’s yet another game that decides that dragons should be funny, cuddly little things, who only want peace all over the world and a lot of teddy-bears and not, in fact, for the same whole world to go up in flames, taking every mortal along with it. Dragon Preservation Society is going to be so pissed. Regardless of this blatant misconception about the dragon kin, Up In Flames is a great puzzle with a tale about cute dragons, captivity, rescue and lots of horrible, horrible deaths by burning alive.
You need to shoot fireballs from the mouth of your little, cute abomination of nature to burn all of the dragon cages, as well as wolves, standing around the level.
You play as a little dragon, whose relatives were kidnapped by foul wolves, of all things, and are being kept in cages. He sets off to rescue his brethren from wolves, also burning every single one of the latter in his fiery breath. ‘Up In Flames’ is a take on slingshot games, like Angry Birds, only with more fireballs. In each level, you need to shoot fireballs from the mouth of your little, cute abomination of nature to burn all of the dragon cages, as well as wolves, standing around the level. Besides requiring the usual trick shots to pass levels, meaning that you need to change the power and direction of your shot, the game has a couple of unusual tricks. Naturally, since you’re shooting fireballs, they can set various wooden structures on fire, which in turn, can set the things that are adjacent to them, including wolves and dragon cages. Don’t worry, your dragons are immune to fire so while the wolves are going to scorch beside them in their deathly convulsions, they will simply stand and smile as cutely as possible. The other trick is the fact that some dragons can catch your fireball with their mouths (eww) and send it flying in some specific direction. Some dragons will shoot it upwards, some forward, others will simply eat it, so you’d better evade these perverts, as you only have a limited number of fireballs available per level – and if you want to actually finish with three stars, then you’d better find a way to bounce a single ball of fire around, so it would do the whole job. Besides dragons, wolves and obstacles of many kinds, gift boxes can be seen on some levels, hitting which will unlock a costume for the dragon. It doesn’t really do anything, but it looks damn cute, so why wouldn’t you do it? All in all, ‘Up In Flames’ is a great game with lots of interesting moments and although it’s not a unique concept, it’s nevertheless a fun one.
